Subjective Career

The thing about being an aspiring artist, be it a novelist, actor, musician, whatever, is that you can identify with a career that you don’t actually have. You can BE these things without actually doing them. As in, I AM a writer, I just WORK as a coffee wench. Profession is far more subjective these days, it’s more of a state of mind than what you get paid for.

There’s definitely a double standard, though, in that it only works for those of us with poetic souls, us tortured-artist types. Similarly, your job must also be shit. You can BE an actor while getting paid to wait tables, but you can’t BE an I.T. consultant while getting paid to fit windows.
